A new report has revealed that the coldest area in the Ur will hit -8C this winter as experts warn that pensioners could suffer following cuts to Winter Fuel Payments.

The “Winter Report” has been carried out by the Online Marketing Surgery and Green Leaf Garden Buildings, who have ranked the parts of the UK most likely to experience the coldest and warmest temperatures.

Their document has been compiled using historical data from Visual Crossing to analyse UK areas and identify their minimum temperatures during the last winter from December 1 to February 29

The report found that the coldest place in the UK during the winter months is Dundee in Scotland, with the minimum temperature being -8.6 last year.

They also found that the warmest temperature in the winter was Swansea, Wales with a minimum temperature of -1.9.

The other nine coldest areas are Worcester, Reading, Solihull, Stockport, Birmingham, Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sutton Coldfield and Oxford.

The warmest places include: Belfast, London, Plymouth, Grimsby, Cardiff, Birkenhead, Liverpool, Aberdeen and Maidstoke.

The low temperatures will have a big impact on elderly people who have had their winter fuel allowance limited.

According to Age UK, over three-quarters of pensioners spend their winter fuel payments on essential energy costs.

There are also fears of pensioners losing their lives due to the cuts.

Dennis Reed of the Silver Voices, a campaign group for the elderly in the UK said: “There is no doubt that the impact of this policy will cause extra deaths from cold-related conditions and put more stress on emergency NHS care this winter.”

Adam Stachura, the director of policy at Age Scotland, said there was no consideration of the impact this would have.

Areas in Scotland have already experienced freezing temperatures.

Stachura said: “It is a scandalous disregard for people’s health and lives. There has been no proper analysis of its impact.”

He added: “It has been taken away in a puff of smoke. There is no understanding of how important this amount of money is for so many people.”
