A mother has expressed outrage after her daughter was allegedly given detention for wearing a Royal British Legion poppy pin on Remembrance Day.

The incident, which the parent shared on TikTok, has gained hundreds of thousands of views as she detailed how her daughter was punished for wearing the commemorative symbol on November 11.

The mother claims the school's justification included concerns that poppy pins could be used as weapons, a stance she described as "ridiculous."

In her viral TikTok video, she revealed: "My daughter's school has done it again in terms of ridiculous detentions being handed out."

She explained receiving a message from her daughter stating "just got a detention for wearing the pin."

"The pin in question is a poppy pin, it's not just any poppy pin, it's the actual British Legion poppies that are being sold everywhere," the mother said.

The parent has since contacted the Royal British Legion about the incident, stating that they and ex-armed forces personnel "are ready to make a stand."

Following up on the incident, the mother revealed that the assistant head contacted her to claim no detention had been set.

"I said 'well there was, her name was on board, she had to stay after lessons, she therefore would had a detention'," the mother explained.

She suggested the school might be trying to "shove it under the carpet."

The assistant head reportedly questioned what type of poppy the student was wearing, asking if it was "a big flamboyant one" or "a different colour."

The mother maintained her daughter "shouldn't be punished" for remembering those who fought for the country.

The mother reported hearing from other parents whose children were also banned from wearing poppies at their schools.

Some schools allegedly cited concerns that "pins could be used to stab people and cause harm."

In another case, pupils were reportedly told they couldn't wear poppies because it "might offend someone."

The mother concluded: "Those people fought for our country to ensure we could have a free country, and sadly we are going to end up forgetting these people because there's too much health and safety and what if we offend someone now?"
