An Asda security guard has been left with a broken ankle after being run over by a mother-of-five with road rage.

Roxanne Dale became furious outside the supermarket store in Wallsend, North Tyneside, in February.

The 36-year-old terrified fellow shoppers by ramming her car into another vehicle.

Footage showed a staff member attempting to de-escalate the ordeal before Dale knocked her down and ran over her foot.

The defendant was on her way to collect her son when things turned ugly, Newcastle Crown Court was told.

Dale tried to make a quick getaway as members of public rushed to help the Asda worker.

The 36-year-old was given a sentence of three years and three months behind bars.

Judge Gavin Doig told her: "The offences arise from an incident on the 8th of February this year. I have watched the CCTV footage of that incident.

"You attended the Asda car park in Wallsend. There was clearly an altercation.

"The altercation outside came to the attention of the security. (The victim) had no idea she was to suffer the injury she was about to at your hands.

"You arrived in your Audi, you drove your vehicle into another vehicle. Fortunately it didn't cause damage to that car or anyone inside or around it.

"You then reversed and drove towards a group of people who were on the road."

The security guard was seriously injured and required surgery to treat her broken ankle.

The victim, who was diagnosed with PTSD, told Newcastle Crown Court that she required metal plates and 14 crews.

In a heartfelt victim impact statement, she said: "What started as a completely normal day for me turned into a nightmare and months of pain. I wake up every day in pain.

"Then there's the emotional and mental part. This has affected me everywhere I go.

"I find it hard to be in a car when others are too close or break too hard. I'm also triggered by loud cars.

"I'm now frightened and scared that I will get hurt again and that is because of you."

Dale, who received a conviction as a juvenile, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, and failing to stop after an accident.

She is also going to be banned from driving for three years following her release from custody.

Penny Hall, mitigating, said: "Prior to her attendance at the car park she had received a rather panicked call from her son. She was worried as to what might be going to happen to him.

"She wanted to make sure he was safe and bring him home. When she got to the Asda car park there were people surrounding him.

"She did not go there intending to cause harm to anyone. She accepts she did cause harm and injury to the complainant for which she is remorseful. She is sorry it happened and asked that I express that.”
