Keir Starmer has come under fire for his handling of the riots which have erupted all over the country.
The Prime Minister, who on Tuesday held an emergency Cobra meeting to address the issue, warned violent rioters would feel the “full force of the law”.
However, his warning didn’t stop thousands from taking to the streets last night, as police met with protesters and counter-protesters at dozens of events across the nation.
Large crowds of anti-racism protesters appeared last night as a ninth day of potential violence threatened to emerge.
Last night, Met Police confirmed eight people had been arrested in south London after 50 people gathered with an “intention to cause disruption and fuel disorder”.
The force continued to say the anti-social yobs had “dragged and thrown objects down the road and thrown bottles at officers.
“This is not linked to protest, this appears to be pure anti-social behaviour,” Met Police said
“Officers are moving in numbers to make arrests.”
Responding to a YouGov poll on X which found a majority of Britons back the recalling of parliament from recess to respond to the riots, former Home Secretary Priti Patel said: “The British public are right.
“The police are accountable to Parliament and the public through the Home Secretary.
“Parliament must be recalled now.”
