Fans of the Olympics have vented their fury, with some believing Jamaican star Kishane Thompson deserved the gold medal instead of Noah Lyles following the 100-metre race last night.

Lyles won on Sunday evening by just five thousandths of a second in arguably the most exciting 100m race of all time.

A photo finish was required to establish who had won the flagship event, with Lyles eventually given the victory with a time of 9.79 seconds.

Having won bronze in Tokyo three years ago, it was a crowning moment for the American.

But some on social media feel Thomspon deserved the win instead, with one user saying: "Thompson was robbed. He beat Noah."

"Not even being bitter but I think Kishane Thompson got robbed by Noah Lyles," were the words of a second.

A third said: "Kishane Thompson has been robbed in broad daylight."

Another opined: "I still don't think Lyles won this race. Thompson was robbed here."

And a fifth said: "Congratulations Kishane Thompson you won gold medal in my books. He crossed before Noah if we're being honest. He got robbed this one (sic)."

More users have jumped to the defence of the Jamaica star.

Another stated: "Don't understand the rules but the Jamaican was there first."

And another said: "Is it head first to win? Thompsons foot clearly over."

When it comes to track events, the winner is the first person to get their chest across the line.

While Thompson's foot was across the line ahead of Lyles, it was the Team USA star who got his chest over first.

Speaking after his win, meanwhile, Lyles expressed his joy at winning the first Olympic gold medal of his career.

“It’s the one I wanted, it’s the hard battle, the amazing opponents, everybody was healthy and came to fight," he said.

“I’m the wolf among wolves. I’ll be honest, I went to Kishane, I said, ‘I’ll be honest, I think you had that one’.

“I was prepared to see his name pop up. I saw my name pop up and I said, goodness gracious, I’m incredible."

He continued: “I’m still moving forward and moving forward, when the time came and I was saying: this is the final and I’m going to need to go out there and do it.

“I wasn’t ready to see it (my name pop up) I’m going to be honest that’s the first time that I wasn’t ready to see it, he was quite a few lanes down so it was quite hard for me to picture where we were, but I guess that was a good thing.”

Lyles is also set to compete in the 200m.

But he's convinced he's the quickest man in the world right now, with the 27-year-old adding: "What’s the title of Olympic champion? [The fastest man on the planet?] Amen."
