Two British citizens have been shot dead and set on fire in a rented car in Malmo, Sweden, with police launching a double-murder investigation.

Their bodies were recovered by firefighters around 2.00pm local time on Sunday afternoon, in Fosieby Industriområde, an industrial district in the country’s third-largest city.

It is believed that the pair rented a car from Copenhagen Kastrup Airport before crossing the Øresund Bridge which connects the two countries.

The two victims are believed to have been shot before the Toyota Rav4. was set alight, according to local media.

Swedish police say they "have an idea of who they are", but currently have not been able to identify either of the victims.

The bodies, which were found in the vehicle on a dirt road, are now with forensic examiners.

There is currently no suspect.

According to local news site Aftonbladet, the double murderer is "prepared to strike again".

Authorities have since launched a manhunt across Malmo asking for anyone who saw a black Toyota Rav4 between 11:30am and 2.00pm in the area on Sunday to come forward.

Kerstin Gossé, spokesperson for the Swedish Police Authority, said: "'We are interested in talking to people who have seen the car.

"It's about a black Danish-registered Toyota of model RAV4."

She added: "We are working hard with various measures in this investigation to bring clarity to this."

Gossé said that they will cooperate with international police forces if necessary regarding the alleged double-murder.

However, she will not reveal whether the incident could be related to gang crime and has said she will not share any further speculation on the killings.
