The Democrats are "walking towards the brink" and have an "enormous mountain to climb" ahead of the August convention, it has been claimed.

US President Joe Biden is continuing to defend his cognitive ability following a string of gaffes at the recent Nato Summit in Washington, where he introduced Ukraine's Volodymir Zelensky as Russian's leader "Vladimir Putin".

However, attention has been drawn away from Biden in recent days after political rival Donald Trump suffered a failed assassination attempt at his political rally in Pennsylvania, where his ear was struck by a bullet.

Speaking to GBN America, former chairman of the California Republican Party Tom Del Becarro said Biden's Democrats "don't have a good hand" with their candidate ahead of the August convention.

Del Becarro explained: "This is unprecedented. What they're trying to do and the mountain they have to climb is enormous.

"Keep in mind, the story will only be the mountain they are trying to climb, not how they would govern in the future."

Noting his predictions for Biden's 2024 future, Del Becarro highlighted that "three years ago", he claimed that the polls "wouldn't return" for the 81-year-old.

He told GBNA: "That's why I think so many Democrats are reticent to jump on board to this, the polls don't look good right now. I made the case three years ago in an op ed on Fox that his polls wouldn't return.

"So if they keep on top of that, they'd be divided."

Turning the discussion to the "divide" of the party itself over Biden's health going into the election and whether he should step down as President, Del Becarro stated that divided parties "do not win elections".

The former California Republican Party chair said: "Divided parties do not win national elections because that drowns out any discussion of what a congressman from Indiana wants to do, or a senator from California wants to do.

"And so they are walking towards the brink. It may be that they don't have a good hand with Biden, and they don't, but they could make it worse."

Host Mark Dolan then asked Del Becarro about rival Donald Trump's chances at an election victory in November, and advised the Republican premier to "not focus on the past" on his campaign trail.

Del Becarro told GBNA: "We could go back and forth about what politicians say in debates, but I will say this about Donald Trump - he needs to go 99.9 per cent positive.

"He needs to stop talking about the past and say on this particular issue, the border, I'm going to do these three things because that will improve your lives.

"On inflation, on the economy, whatever the topic is, he needs to go positive and say what he wants to do and let the Democrats sort out their problems."
