A body found in Tenerife has been confirmed as missing teenager Jay Slater, a court spokesperson has said.

Officials in Spain say the injuries suffered were compatible with a fall "in a rocky area".

A post-mortem, carried out on the body discovered on Monday, confirmed that the fingerprints matched those of Slater.

Human remains were located in the area where the 19-year-old vanished last month.

A statement reads: "We have a positive identification and more data: fingerprint tests show that the body is that of Jay Slater and that the death was caused by trauma consistent with a fall in a rocky area."

A spokesman for the Civil Guard confirmed yesterday that "the lifeless body of the young man" was found in Rural de Teno national park.

The 19-year-old vanished in Tenerife on June 17 after he set off to walk back to his accommodation on the Spanish island.

Slater's possessions including his phone, clothes and personal documents were found alongside his body.

A mountain rescue team from the Spanish Civil Guard located his body 29 days after he disappeared.

Spanish police announced they would be ending their search almost two weeks after the teenager first vanished, but detectives carried on the investigation "under secrecy."

Editor of the Canarian Weekly Chris Elkington has said that the search was carried on under secrecy in order to stop amateur detectives from interfering in their work.

Friends and family of Slater have paid tribute to the "happiest and most smiley person in the room".

Slater's close friend Brad Hargreaves, who he travelled to Tenerife with on his first holiday without his parents, wrote: "No words. Nothing be the same without you Rest easy brother love you always."

Lucy Law, who was the last known person to speak to the 19-year-old, paid tribute saying: "Honestly lost for words.

"Always the happiest and most smiley person in the room, you was (sic) one of a kind Jay and you'll be missed more than you know."
