The reason why it has taken so long to find a body in the search for missing Jay Slater has been outlined by local expert and Travel Writer Joe Crawley.

It has been revealed that human remains have been found in the area where the teenager disappeared over a month after the search began.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard confirmed that "the lifeless body of the young man" was discovered in Rural de Teno National Park.

Slater was last heard of when he called his friend to say that he was lost, his phone was on one per cent charge and he was thirsty.

The Civil Guard said in a statement that he may have died due to an accidental fall.

Speaking to GB News, Cawley explained that the body that has been found today was in an area that was difficult to access.

He said: "Apparently the body was found reasonably close to a village. It wasn't too far out, but it was in an area of the ravine that was very inaccessible.

"There are many areas like this where it takes experienced mountaineers to to access these areas.

"It's very easy to to to miss something in that kind of area. It's very steep, very volcanic. It's very dangerous terrain."

He added: "They have released the exact location yet but looking at satellite maps and images, it looks like it was not at the end of the ravine towards the ocean.

"It was closer to the actual village of Masca which suggests that the accident possibly took place very soon after he went missing.

"He didn't seem to have travelled that far, and whether he stumbled or not, we're not sure."

The apprentice bricklayer's phone was last traced to the Masca ravine in a remote, mountainous national park.

Slater - from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire - travelled to an Airbnb in the village of Masca with people he met at the NRG musical festival on Sunday, June 16.

A missing persons organisation has confirmed: "Although formal identification is yet to be carried out, the body was found with Mr Slater’s possessions and clothes.

"A post mortem and forensic enquiries will follow.

"LBT Global are supporting the family at this distressing time and ask for everyone to afford them space and privacy to come to terms with the news."
