Shannen Doherty has died aged 53 after a nine-year battle with cancer, her publicist has confirmed.

Leslie Sloane, who worked with Doherty for years, confirmed the Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed actress had died.

The star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” Sloane told People on Sunday.

“On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease.

“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie.

“The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Writing tributes on social media, fans of the actress reacted with sadness to the news.

One user said: “So so sad. Sleep tight Shannen. Brenda and Prue were quite a big part of my tv life in the 90s.”

Another wrote: “Shannen Doherty was a true warrior. It’s very inspirational how she handled her disease. RIP.”

A third said: “Shannen Doherty has passed away. We lost a great artist, a teenage icon for many of us. Rest in peace.”

One more said: “RIP Shannen Doherty. You will be very missed, thank you for playing such a monumental part in my childhood.”

Actor Eric West said on X: “My heart is broken. It was a pleasure to meet Shannen Doherty while filming our movie Fortess a little over 2 years ago!

“She was full of warm energy and positive vibes. So young. So talented. May she rest well.”

Giving an update about her health ahead of her death, Doherty told the publication: “I definitely have days where I say, 'Why me?'”

She continued: “And then I go, well, 'Why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?' None of us do.”

Doherty had previously expressed her support for Princess Kate after she revealed her own cancer diagnosis in March.

She wrote on her Instagram story of Kate: “Being a public figure does not mean the public owns that person.

“We ALL have the right to go through illness or life privately.”

“The onslaught of conspiracy theories, ownership, and plain, morbid curiosity forced this person to explain herself before she had come to terms with it and explained it to her children.

“I pray this is a learning moment for us all to respect privacy or others, regardless of being in the public eye.”

“And Princess Kate, I admire your strength through the endless onslaught you've been under while going through cancer.”
