The body of a missing British mountaineer has been found in Spain following an Interpol alert.

A 70-year-old man’s dead body was located yesterday following an alert on Monday.

The British mountaineer, reportedly from London, was carrying out one of the stages between the Lizara Shelter and Candanchú.

He was then believed to have been injured or lost.

The Greim Jaca and the Huesca Air Unit responded to the alert by flying over the area.

However, emergency services were unable to locate the 70-year-old on Monday.

The search continued on Tuesday, with two specialists carrying out the route supposedly taken by the hiker.

The Gendarmerie High Mountain Platoon (PGHM) from Olorón-Saint Marie in France also joined the operation.

Civil Guard police chief Angel Sanz Coronado said: "The Civil Guard is prepared to carry out a mass search.
