Huge tower block erupts in flames as thick smoke engulfs building and can be seen for miles

A huge tower block has been engulfed by flames as thick smoked billowing from the tall building could be seen for miles.

The terrifying blaze in Staines-upon-Thames erupted at 12.30pm, with residents being warned to stay indoors.

Photographs on social media showed fire damage on the roof after flames roared through the building for nearly two hours.

The Surrey block of flats were reportedly undergoing refurbishment at the time.

Scaffolding was seen attached to seven floors of the building.

Black clouds of smoke were sen from miles away.

Passengers aboard flights landing at Heathrow could reportedly see smoke rising into the sky.

The cause of the fire is not yet know but there were unconfirmed reports of a gas leak.

A concerned local told The Sun: "Just heard a huge explosion outside my house - a tower block under construction down the road is now up in flames in Staines Upon Thames."

Another witness added: “Huge fire with thick black plume of smoke on roof of new build flats in Staines town centre. Hope all are safe.”

A social media user separately wrote: "Huge fire broken out in Staines town centre.

"Looks to be from the rooftop of the new flats being built."

A Surrey Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call this afternoon around 12.30pm to a report of a fire at the former Tothill Car Park, Elmsleigh Road, Staines-upon-Thames.

“Eight pumps have been sent, the first arriving at the scene around 12.35pm.

“Crews remain at the scene tackling the fire.”

An update on social media added: "This fire is now under control and all people are accounted for.

"Please stay away from the area for some more time, if possible, whilst we continue our work here.

"Thanks to staff and partners who have supported at this incident."
