The Acolyte's latest episode has left Star Wars fans fuming as the latest instalment of the franchise included a scene in which the characters made a point to clarify someone's pronouns.

The thriller series sparked a huge backlash over the conversation, which took place between Osha and Jecki Lon, with some claiming they were "done" with the franchise.

In the scene in question, Osha Aniseya (played by Amandla Stenberg) asks: "Who is that?"

"That’s Bazil," Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen) answers before Osha continues: "Is he... or they, with us?"

As viewers discussed the show, many complained about the "cringe" shoehorning in of the discussion.

"Pure cringe has been discovered. Disney did it," one person wrote on X.

"This clip is the most I will ever see of this garbage," another fumed.

Echoing this, another penned: "The pronouns for Acolyte are garbage/trash."

"They’re bent on ruining the legacy of this franchise," a fourth commented.

"Annnnnnd I’m officially DONE. That’s enough woke Disney propaganda for me. Byyyye!"

"More woke, less viewerships," someone else commented, while another added: "It’s so dumb. It’s so cringy. It adds nothing to the story. I don’t even watch the Star Wars shows and movies anymore."

Others disagreed, with one person sharing: "I love the Acolyte, and all things Star Wars. People can deal with it." (sic)

The series has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any show or film in the Star Wars brand, with viewers leaving a string of negative reviews.

The series has a 14 per cent audience score, lower than 2008's Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which achieved a 19 per cent score.

The show's IMDb rating is 3.5 stars, with 56 per cent of users giving it just one star.

It's not the first time fans of the franchise have fumed over the "woke" aspects in the newer instalments.

Earlier this month, creator and showrunner Leslye Headland stated: "I think that R2-D2 is a lesbian."

A clip of the interview was posted on X, but the interaction left long-term fans of Star Wars annoyed, as one user commented: "I stopped watching Star Wars years ago when they decided to put woke messaging in their scripts."
