Farming Minister Mark Spencer refused to be drawn on speculation that Boris Johnson is set to become the Tories’ “secret weapon” in the final throes of the General Election campaign.

The former Prime Minister has reportedly signed tens of thousands of letters that will be delivered to voters later this week.

Asked on GB News whether the Tories will utilise Johnson further, he instead focused on the “real danger” of Keir Starmer potentially becoming the next prime minister with a large majority.

“Boris recognises that if you don’t vote for Rishi Sunak, you will get Keir Starmer by accident”, he said in reference to voters backing the insurgent Reform UK party.

“There is a real danger that those people who are thinking of voting for another political party other than the Conservative Party will wake up the next morning with Sir Keir Starmer in government.

“I don’t want that to happen, that’s why I’m out there, and I will be right up to polling day to convince people to vote Conservative.”

Webster pointed out that Spencer’s party have been “making that point for weeks” before asking again whether he can foresee a scenario in which Johnson hits the campaign trial to support his former chancellor, Rishi Sunak.

“I think we’ve all got a responsibility as members of the Conservative Party”, he said.

“Boris is a member of the Conservative Party and we’re all out there trying to deliver that message.

“When we wake up on 5 July, there are only two people that could be prime minister.

“That is either Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak. People who are minded to vote Reform or for another political party will in fact elect Starmer by not supporting the Conservatives.”

Wrapping up the interview, Isabel said Spencer was “dodging the question” but had to be let go.

Johnson’s move to urge people to vote Tory is his closest involvement yet in the Conservatives’ bid to spark a revival in the polls.

Nigel Farage’s Reform are threatening to dent the Tories’ vote share with some polls placing them above the party of government.

According to the Telegraph, some talks have taken place about Johnson potentially appearing in person on the campaign trail.

He has not been in the UK, however, with his wife, Carrie Johnson, posting images on her Instagram on Monday night of the family on holiday in “beautiful Sardinia”.
