A dramatic rescue operation is underway in the English Channel, with reports of up to 60 migrants in the water, GB News can reveal.

British and French vessels have raced to the scene, about halfway across the Channel between Calais and Dover.

The Border Force vessels Defender and Ranger, along with support ship Taku are on scene.

A coastguard helicopter and the lifeboats from Dover and Walmer have also been dispatched.

A mayday was relayed by the Coastguard reporting up to 60migrants reported to be in the water.

There are also reports that one migrant was seen drifting away from the rescue scene.

It is not yet clear how the migrant boat got into difficulties and those on board ended up in the water.

People traffickers have taken advantage of an improvement in weather conditions to launch a number of small boats over the past two days.

GB News has been told that as many as 250 migrants are currently in boats on the French side of the Channel this morning and attempting to cross to the UK.

The Border Force vessels Ranger and Defender have picked up multiple migrants from the rescue scene and have taken them to Dover harbour.

Lifeboats and other vessels are continuing to search the area at the centre of rescue operation.
