GB News presenter Michelle Dewberry has launched a scathing attack on Rishi Sunak's proposed amendments to the Equality Act, questioning why it has taken so long for the Tories to take action.

This week, Sunak announced his pledge to recognise "biological sex" in the law as opposed to "sex", sparking outrage amongst the transgender community.

Defending his decision, Sunak has affirmed that the current act "lacks clarity" and said the "bold action" will seek to "protect women and girls" in single-sex spaces.

Sharing her thoughts on GB News, Michelle admitted she was "frankly furious" about the debate surrounding the proposed changes and questioned "how we've got to the point" of needing clarity on biological sex.

Discussing the plans on her show Dewbs & Co, Michelle raged: "I feel so strongly about this one. I think it's absolutely absurd, the very fact that we're having conversations about biological sex.

"I'm quite frankly furious with everybody on this. I don't even understand how we've got to the point where you can even people will look at you seriously and tell you that a man can become a woman.

"And that when you see someone, who is clearly a man, you have to pretend that they are a woman, or else! I'm livid about it."

Throwing the debate to her panel, Michelle asked Director of Popular Conservatism Mark Littlewood for this thoughts on the proposed changes.

Littlewood was in agreement with Michelle, and questioned why the Prime Minister has made it a policy announcement when it is "common sense".

Littlewood explained: "Clearly sex is biological. I do wish that Rishi and the government had actually taken the action to put this in place prior to the election. The conservatives have been in office for 14 years, they could have done something about it.

"But it is absolutely ridiculous that some bloke, who purports to identify as a woman, can access women's changing rooms, and women's bathrooms. So full marks to Rishi, but it's a bit sad that we're even having to have this discussion."

Former Labour MP Luciana Berger was almost in complete agreement with Michelle and Littlewood, but argued that conversations "do need to be had" on the "dignity and respect" of the transgender community.

Berger told GB News: "I totally accept the premise, but I do think we should be having this debate and having these discussions, thinking more about the concepts of dignity and respect, which are kind of absent from the conversation today."

Michelle pressed Berger on her meaning of "dignity and respect", asking the former MP: "Do you think it's disrespectful to say that a biological man cannot become a biological woman?"

Berger responded: "People do go through gender reassignment, but no."

She added: "Labour have been very clear to say that we should have common sense guidance on this issue. If there was anything that needed clarifying, we've had 14 years under this Conservative government to do it."

Shadow Defence Secretary John Helen has said Labour "will not want to amend" the Act.

In a statement, the minister said: "It's not needed. The Act, incidentally, was a Labour act in 2010, that was opposed by the Tories, but it already provides protections for single sex spaces for biological women.

"The government has had 14 years to do that and it hasn't. This, to be honest, is a distraction from the election campaign, where most people want to hear why the cost of living pressures are so great, what the Tories are going to do and what Labour is going to do to try and help make life more affordable and Britain better."
