A person has been killed at an airport in Amsterdam after being sucked into a plane engine as witnesses watched in horror, local media reports.

The individual was allegedly caught in the engine of departing KLM flight 1341 at Schiphol Airport.

Emergency services responded to the incident after the tragedy was first reported at 3pm this afternoon.

Passengers and crew members were said to be onboard the aircraft when the disaster unfolded.

In a statement, the airport said: "A horrific incident occurred today where a person became trapped in the engine of an aircraft.

"Our thoughts are with the loved ones and we care for the passengers and colleagues who witnessed this incident."

Flight 1341, operated by the Dutch airline, was due to depart from Schiphol airport for Billund in Denmark.

An investigation into the incident has been launched by the Royal Military Police.

The "Koninklijke Marechaussee" Royal Military Police said in a statement: "An incident occurred this afternoon on the Schiphol platform where a person fell into a running aircraft engine and died."

Witnesses claim to have heard a "hellish noise" when the person was sucked into the engine.

"Many people saw it happen," one person told De Telegraaf.

It is currently unknown whether the person was a passenger or member of staff at the airport.

Passengers and crew members who witnessed the horrific incident are said be receiving special care.

In a statement, pilots union VNV said: "Our first concern and thoughts go out to those involved and their relatives.

"We offer our cooperation and expertise in the investigation into the exact cause."
