Star NFL kicker Harrison Butker has been defended for his controversial remarks by US political commentator Brandon Tatum.

The 28-year-old has faced criticism after telling female graduates that one of their most important roles in life will be “homemaker”.

He also criticised abortion and LGBT Pride in a speech at Benedictine College, Kansas.

Speaking on GBN America, conservative political commentator Brandon Tatum issued a staunch defence of Butker, saying his comments “embodied the American dream”.

Asked about the reaction to the comments, Tatum told Mark Dolan: “It’s been a tragedy”.

“I’m very perplexed and shocked that women are upset about what Harrison [Butker] said.

“I cannot imagine a woman being upset at the idea of, at some point in her life, being married and birthing children.

“Clearly, somebody loved having children, because that’s how all of us got there.

“I’m shocked at the backlash. What Harrison said embodied Catholicism, and it also embodied the American dream. And for some reason, they are speaking to his point that the culture is getting so degenerate that if a man elevates his wife.

“He literally shed tears at the idea of his wife’s excellence in his life, and women are absolutely hating him over it.

“It’s shocking to me.”

In his speech earlier in the month, Butker told women graduates that they had been told “the most diabolical lies”.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world”, he said.

“But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

The NFL distanced itself from the remarks, saying they were given “in a personal capacity”.

Many social media users also criticised the NFL star, with many rushing to sign a petition that has now amassed thousands of signatures demanding his firing.

Stefanie Hills, a former NFL cheerleader for the Chiefs, said on TikTok: "The best part of your speech when you said 'stay in your lane' ten plus times. Bro, take your own advice."
