A child has died after falling from the "upper floor" of a block of flats in South London, police have said.

Emergency services had swarmed to the scene on Hotspur Street in Kennington just before 4.30pm this afternoon, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second person was also hospitalised, the London Ambulance Service (LAS) said, but police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told GB News: "Police were called at 4.23pm on Friday, May 24, to a child having fallen from the upper floor of a flat on Hotspur Street, SE11.

"Officers attended along with LAS. Despite their efforts, the child was pronounced dead.

"The child's family have been informed.

"At this very early stage, there is nothing to indicate that the incident is suspicious, however enquires are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

"Cordons are in place at the scene."

A LAS spokesperson told GB News: "We were called at 4.21pm today (May 24) to reports of a person who had fallen from a building in Hotspur Street, SE11.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance which consisted of a paramedic and a doctor in a car.

“The first paramedic arrived in less than four minutes. Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a child died at the scene. We treated a second patient and took her to hospital."

The incident follows the news that six-year-old Alam Makial had fallen from the window in his parents' flat in Jacobs House in Plaistow, East London, just days ago.

Paramedics and a trauma team had arrived on the scene within minutes to reports of a child having "fallen from height", but a London Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed that "very sadly, a child was pronounced dead at the scene".

Makial's family members later revealed that his mother complained at least five times to local Newham Council about a safety latch on the window from which he fell.

On the day, a relative had told the Evening Standard: "They are very sad, devastated - they are in a bad way. The dad is in Canada, the mum is here. How can this have happened?"

While a neighbour added: "I spoke to the mum a few weeks ago, and I saw her with her son in the lift with her boy - he was lovely... Today, she could barely speak."

Another resident, a 28-year-old mother-of-two, said: "We are in utter shock - we know the family. The parents are at the hospital - other family members are in the flat.

"Apparently, the boy was up early and then fell from the window... It was an accident, but no one knows how it happened. People are looking for answers."
