Britons living in Spain have been warned about a “fascist” plot to identity all expats.

UK nationals residing in the Iberian peninsula were informed about a plan to create a register of foreign names amid growing concern from locals about “overtourism”.

Mass tourism activists in Girona laid out plans for the register and record of foreign nationals.

Local news outlet Catalan News claimed activists believe Girona has reached its “limit” in terms of tourist numbers.

A social media user said: “Far right nationalism in Girona.

“Looks like populism is taking a hold even in traditionally left leaning liberal areas."

A second added: "List of foreign residents? What has that got to do w tourism? Sounds a bit fascist to me."

A third wrote: "The Spanish Government already has plenty of departments with just such lists, the principle among which would be Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria, to which the Generalitat has access. Nonsense political maneuvering."

Activists hope to put pressure on public administrations by to implement urgent measures, as "it is already too late," and Girona and its urban area have "reached the limit."

They propose increasing the numbers of patrols to find illegal tourist apartments or creating a list of all foreign residents living in Girona.

Activists believe the situation is creating a number of “elitist ghetto areas”.

They said: “The tourist monoculture has been good business for a few, but a death sentence for the locals.”

Spokesperson Jordi Mateu also criticised what he described as the "mass" arrival of expats.

The issue of overtourism has engulfed a number of European countries in recent months.

A number of holiday hotspots in Spain have introduced measures to curb boozy Brits from disturbing local residents.

Graffiti has also been seen in both Spain and Greece as tensions reach fever-pitch.
