A PGA Championship shuttle bus was involved in a crash outside Valhalla Golf Club early in the morning of the first round leading to spectators facing a long wait to get into the venue.

Record crowds are expected to attend Valhalla Golf Club this week for the 2024 PGA Championship.

Around 200,000 spectators are expected to walk through the gates from Thursday to Sunday after record ticket sales.

The first round is always one of the more popular days for tickets to see who takes an early lead in the tournament.

But some spectators faced heavy delays getting into the Louisville venue after a vehicle crash right outside the golf course.

According to local news reports, a PGA Championship shuttle bus was involved in a crash with a car causing big delays on the busy stretch of road.

An ambulance was said to have been called to the scene, but no injuries were reported.

The incident happened at 7.15am local time, just 10 minutes before the tournament got underway by Michael Block.

The crash led to huge delays with all westbound traffic being halted while two trucks removed both vehicles.

A second crash happened nearby around 35 minutes later to cause further delays to those hoping to attend the first round of the PGA Championship.

Patrons caught up in the delays aired their frustration on social media who felt tournament organisers should have done a better job with the shuttle service.

One message read: "@louisville and @pgachampionship the shuttle line needs security. After waiting 45 minutes for a bus people cut line from the parking lot and jump right on a bus."

Another person moaned: "@PGAChampionship @PGA Worst run event since a busy 7th grade basketball tournament so far. My wife and I just waited in literally a mile long line for shuttle buses. No porta potties. No volunteers. Hour long wait to get on the bus. $500 a ticket."

A third complained: "Nice job #Louisville and @PGA Mile long line for shuttle buses. It’s like you’ve never run an event before huh?"

One other person said: "Parking is a disaster. Standing in line for a bus and you can’t see the end of the line."

Xander Schauffele stole the headlines from the morning tee times as he shot an incredible nine-under-par round of 62 for a new PGA Championship record.

It also matched the lowest round in major golf history as he carded nine birdies to give himself a healthy lead going into Friday.

Rory McIlroy also kept himself in touching distance with an impressive five-under-par round of 66.
