A suspected XL Bully attack has forced a young girl to go to hospital with serious injuries.

Air ambulances and armed officers attended the scene after police received information about an attack over the weekend.

The incident took place in the area of Lambs Lane in Falmouth on Saturday evening.

A large wider police presence was reported at the scene.

Devon & Cornwall Police seized the suspected XL Bully after the incident, a spokesperson confirmed.

It has been illegal to own an XL Bully without an exemption licence since February 1.

Stricter measures were brought in to place the mut under the Dangerous Dogs Act following a spate of fatal attacks last year.

It is also illegal to sell, rehome, abandon, breed or to have an XL Bully in public without a lead and muzzle.

A Devon & Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Police were called by the ambulance service at around 7.10pm on Saturday 13 April to a property in Lowenek Close, Falmouth.

"It was reported that a child had been bitten by a dog, causing serious injuries.

"The girl was taken to Treliske Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Her next of kin attended hospital with her."

Dog attacks also increased by around 22 per cent between 2021 and 2023, with a number coming from XL Bullies.

The statement added: "Officers attended the scene and seized the dog, which is believed to be an XL Bully.

"An investigation remains ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this incident."
