Amy Winehouse film Back to Black has seen a lot of anticipation ahead of its release, but it’s also sparked some backlash.
The movie has seen mixed reviews from critics and many have questioned whether or not it should have been made in the first place, and director Sam Taylor-Johnson has responded to the criticism.
Taylor-Johnson, 57, attended the premiere for the film along with her potential James Bond star husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 33.
When asked about the backlash, she replied: “Go see it, is, I think, the smartest thing for me to say to that because I think it’s very hard to judge from a photograph or stories,” Metro.co.uk reports.
She later told the publication: “If you go see the film, I think you’ll understand what I wanted to do was to celebrate and uphold [Winehouse]. And I think that people will enjoy the music.”
A first look at the film saw fans of the late singer fuming on social media, with many deeming the trailers and teaser clips “disrespectful”.
Fifty Shades of Grey filmmaker Taylor-Johnson was joined by her husband on the red carpet and later joined the cast of the film for the premier when he left, according to reports by Metro.co.uk.
Winehouse’s family were also in attendance, including her dad Mitch, 73 and mum Janis, 69.
The couple has also been at the centre of criticism from Winehouse fans for singing off on the biopic about her life, which is set to take a look at the tragic singer’s struggles.
Winehouse’s unique vocals and style saw her thrown into fame in 2006 before the iconic star’s tragic death at 27 in 2011.
Touching on this complaint, Taylor-Johnson told Empire magazine: “They have no involvement in terms of… like, they couldn’t change things.
“They couldn’t dictate how I was to shoot. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have done it.”
The director and her Marvel star husband are sharing the headlines at the moment, with speculation the Kick-Ass star has been offered the next Bond role.
Talk around the next Bond movie has frustrated fans thanks to a string of delays, most recently because of last year’s Hollywood strikes.
